The electronic Health Card - Information and facts

In order to prevent loss of information, costly multiple check-ups and incorrect medication prescriptions in the future, an improved digital networking of cost units, medical care providers and insurants is essential in the German health system. Since 1 January 2004, the law for the modernisation of statutory health insurance (GMG) has therefore been in place to regulate and enforce the creation of an electronic data transmission infrastructure. As part of the complex information, communication and security infrastructure, the electronic Health Card makes a significant contribution to optimizing, accelerating and reducing the costs of data transfer between medical care providers, health insurance companies, chemists and patients. Medical care is improved, unnecessary multiple check-ups which often place extra strain on the patient are reduced and high treatment costs are minimized. When the gradual introduction is complete, around 82 million people in Germany will be using the electronic Health Card in place of the previous health insurance card. This is regarded as the key to the extensive modernization of the health system in Germany. However, networking all medical care providers and cost units in the health sector and equipping all insurants with personalized cards can only take place in a gradual process due to the complexity of the requirements. The introduction of the electronic Health Card will therefore take place in several steps.

The task of introducing the electronic Health Card and creating the required infrastructure was entrusted to the head organisation of the joint self-administration of the statuary health insurance companies in accordance with the law for the modernization of the statuary health insurance. The company gematik GmbH was founded to implement these measures.
